When Change Goes Viral: The New Normal

The New Normal In today's rapidly evolving technological landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a driving force behind innovation. One particular area of AI that has gained significant attention is Generative AI. Generative AI refers to a subset of machine learning techniques that enable computers to generate new content, such as text, images, and music, that is indistinguishable from human-created content. The driving force behind this transformative technology is the Natural Language Interface (NLI), which allows humans to interact with machines using natural language, making technology more accessible and intuitive.

Take a second to consider this: If this amazing technology were only available to the relative few who understood how to write code or work with complicated technology, would we be talking about ChatGPT and Google’s Bard that have captured our interest and fascination? It would likely hit a news cycle or two like all the major scientific breakthroughs and soon fade because most people couldn’t relate to it. The reason we are here and why this time is different is because of the Natural Language Interface.

The age of the citizen developer:

There are approximately 28M software engineers / developers globally and 200M active ChatGPT users.  NLI just enabled ~10x increase in the number of people who can interface with a machine produce results.  These new intuitive interfaces are lowering the barrier to innovation and solution creation.

Global developers over time and current ChatGPT users

Gartner is generally credited for the “citizen” technologist personas. We’ve seen the evolution of the citizen integrator, citizen data scientist and now the focus is on the citizen developer.

Letting a BILLION flowers bloom:

Letting a billion flowers bloom

Lowering the barriers to solution creation means greater diversity and domain knowledge in problem solving, which is very exciting!! This combination of greater access to technology across a greater population will bring about an exponential increase in solutions in the marketplace.  Google popularized the “let a thousand flowers bloom” approach to innovation.  This time around maybe it’s a billion flowers? Regardless of the number it stands to reason it will be orders of magnitude higher than before.  The vast majority of these will miss the mark but I look forward to the creative solutions that no one has thought of prior or could not build due to lack of access to technology.

Overcoming challenges in implementing Generative AI and NLI

Existing solutions in the marketplace either have or will integrate NLI into its interface.  Consumer adoption has been swift with enterprises quickly following and trying to understand how to automate the mundane and insert intelligence into its workflows.  This seismic shift does come with a host of problems around data privacy and security, discerning what is real vs fake and flat-out using technology to exploit people and businesses.  We are in for our fair share of challenges but there is no putting this genie back in the bottle.  I see tooling and efforts around cyber security ramping up and we need the right government policy in place to incentivize the appropriate behavior and an ethical use of these powerful solutions.

Walking the talk:

I can speak from experience of building and leading a Data Science practice as well as other technology teams at a Fortune 20 company.  Gen AI does not replace your Data Scientists or your IT department but it will unlock capabilities and solutions faster than before which is something organizations need to balance. Speaking for myself, I have build two software products and multiple Project Manager accelerators in months or weeks that I would have taken me months or even a year following the traditional route.

Conclusion: Embracing the transformative power of Generative AI and NLI

The primary takeaways:

1.     The natural interface (in combination with the technology) are driving adoption levels we’ve never witnessed. Obsess on problem solving, not the tech and don’t be afraid to jump in and experiment.

2.     Generative AI is a powerful aide & copilot for building solutions, performing research and many, many other use cases.

3.     Individuals and companies can drive massive efficiency. Some say upwards of 30%.

4.     The pace of change, business cycles and iteration loops are getting faster and tighter.  It is hard to imagine waiting 18 months for a new product or feature.

Together, Generative AI and NLI have the potential to transform various industries, from healthcare to finance, by automating tasks, improving decision-making, and enhancing customer experiences. It is essential for businesses to embrace the transformative power of Generative AI and NLI to stay competitive in the ever-evolving technological landscape.
